There are a lot of head fakes going on for sure. Rizzo/Lerner wanted the

world to know what was offered last September because they wanted to set the standard that they would be competing against this off season. Plus, they can gauge response and decide whether that offer expired (to be replaced with something lower) or whether it stays in place.

Are the Dodgers pulling a rope-a-dope? I'd think they would have to supplement their offer somehow to take into account the insane CA income taxes versus, say Virginia. Whether Harper could make more in that media market through endorsements over DC or Phila. to make the taxes worth it is data I don't have. We also don't know how important it is to Bryce to be close to hits roots in Vegas.

Are the Padres just having the meeting to show their fans they "tried?" Would Bryce want to go to a loser? (note: DC was a loser generally before he got there, so maybe, but he had no choice).

As a Nats fan, ideally scenario is Philly whiffs on both Harper and Machado, but I don't think that's likely. So I hope instead they land Machado so Bryce doesn't go there.

I've heard buzz that maybe Bryce signs a bigtime short-term deal with the Nats, or even a long-term deal with an early opt-out, and sees if he can hit Boras' gonzo money targets a couple of years down the road.
