Follow-up to my car warranty thread: Honda Pilot or Toyota Highlander?

These are the finalists for my wife's new ride. She's leaning towards the Toyota. It seems to be the more reliable, better reviewed vehicle. But everyone I know who owns a Pilot (and I know a lot, apparently), swears by the Honda.

We're definitely looking pre-owned. We can't afford a brand new car, nor would I want to buy one. Any difference in the model years? I'd like to keep it within the last five. Based on what I've seen that we can afford, '15-17 is going to be our target range. Any gotchas with either I need to look out for?

Lastly, what's the max mileage I should consider? My gut tells me to stay under 40k. But given the higher reliability ratings, should I consider something with upwards of 50k miles on it? I can already see this purchase going over budget, but at least I talked her down from the hybrid.
