I think there are other issues, but academics play a part


It was one of the greatest sources of frustration for Al Groh. If you look at the player quality in his first few classes with a focus on academic casualties, the impact is startling. Al brought in a top ten class and was wrongly criticized in the press for getting so little out of a top ten class, but only 11 players in that class ever made it to the field. In a conversation he once told me it was like throwing nonswimmers in the deep end of a pool and telling them to swim. As he began to pay more attention to the academic background of the school’s he recruited, attrition improved, but athletic talent fell off.
