That seemed to be a pattern. AG was clearly miffed about what Jocular John

promised him when he left the Jets in Dec. 2000 and the administrative support he was getting by 2007 and 2008. I took the whole weird Guy in the Glass thing as "I kept my word and did exactly what I said I was going to do, but now I'm taking the fall for the mistakes and deceit of others." I don't think it was the whole truth by any means, but there was some truth to that.

ML was virtually hand picked NOT to complain about the lack of administrative support or competence JO was giving him. He was subservient to JO (and JO to a certain faction of donors), and if you don't believe me, ask yourself what P5 coach has virtually all of his assistants fired, keeps his own job, and doesn't get to pick the replacements. Perhaps that's why CL/JO kept him around for 2-3 seasons after it was clear as day to everyone else that he wasn't the guy to get it donebecause they had a guy who wouldn't complain or comment (or even know about, perhaps) UVA's failure to maintain a modern football operation.

If you parse some of Bronco's comments, he was deceived a bit too when he took the job. Credit JO's smarmy sales pitch, I guess. Bronco talked a lot more openly about what the program fundamentally needed on an "emergency basis" AFTER Carla promised it to him (no doubt, herself horrified at the discrepancies between UVA and UGA) than when CL and JO were at the helm. He talked after the first season that he thought he signed up for a rebuild, when in actuality it was a reboot.

All of this is to say the CL/JO regime had no clue how to run football. They could pick people of high character (usually/mostly, as there are some notable whiffs in several sports) but they couldn't always pick winners. See Mike London. Specifically with regards to the hyper-competitive sport of football, CL/JO never understood that picking a high character coach who's also a winner (see Bronco) ALSO isn't enough, if they don't have a competent administration and infrastructure behind them. Thank you Carla Williams for accepting your position as UVA AD.
