In the interest of lighting a candle, etc ... let me once again recommend

Charles C. Mann's excellent set of books "1491" and "1493", about the Americas as they existed when (non-Vikings) Europeans first discovered them, and the immediate and on going effects of the Columbian exchange respectively. The history of European colonization in the Americas doesn't fit neatly in to ANYBODY'S ideology, left or right, and Mann's relentlessly factual take is pretty much exactly what we need right now.
