I did exactly this out of high school except I joined the Navy

to become an Electronics Tech. It was a wise move but there is one gotcha. Corporations tend to slap a glass ceiling on non-degreed technical employees. I was salaried for the last 20 years at GE but I spent most of those years with a target on my back because regardless of performance level, GE would let the technicians and specialists go and keep their lowest performing degree person. Managers would not promote you because they said if you don't workout they get the blame for hiring a non-degreed person. It wasn't their decision. It came down from on high. We also need to bring manufacturing jobs back The trades industry pays well but often the medical benefits are often meager.
