I have never been disappointed there

I will say that I was very disappointed in Prime 109 a couple of weeks ago when I was in town. Service was mediocre (it took s nearly 25 minutes to get a drink after we were seated and service was slow thereafter to the point of nearly rude). Food, for the most part, was as advertised except for my steak which was one of the worst I’ve ever had. I ordered the aged T-bone on the recommendation of our server. It was cooked perfectly, but it was as tasteless a piece of meat as I’ve ever had. My son-in-law (to be) had the regular ribeye and it was fantastic. He agreed mine was not very good and for $75.00 it should have been fantastic. The appetizers were excellent - we had the pate and the tartare - both outstanding.

Our second round of drinks took almost 20 minutes as well. We asked our server if the bar was just backed up and she candidly admitted that it was her fault, without elaboration. When I arrived (I had dropped of the rest to make sure we were on time) I stood while the three hosts stared at a computer or greeted a regular before recognizing I was there so that I could be seated with my family (seated on the side behind columns so I couldn’t see them to seat myself). Our coats had been checked, so as we were leaving the nice young man took the check claim and brought two of three checked coats. He went to retrieve the last coat and was then intercepted at the coat closet by other departing diners, again apparent regulars, and he started a lovely conversation with them. I had to go over after it was apparent that he was not going to excuse himself from the conversation to get the coat out of the closet. The guests apologized for interrupting, which was appreciated, but nothing from the staff member other than good night and thanks for coming.

Some of this is picky as I am usually easygoing but frankly I was irritated by the meal. For the $ spent here, I believe that pretty much everything should be impeccable. If Chefhoo or other one of the more knowledgeable posters reads this, I’m wondering about the etiquette of saying something about the steak. Is it ok to say it’s just not very good or not what I expected or what? I usually do not say anything at all or at least until after the email is over and paid for.

Another disturbing trend mentioned by Spud, so I’m not just picking on Prime here, cocktails in many places are becoming a very short pour. I really appreciate the single block of ice, but for $12-$16 per drink with a decent bourbon, that’s no excuse for a pretty skimpy cocktail that is done in about 4 sips.

That being said, it’s definitely a special occasion kind of place for my normal budget for meals and, except for the service and 1 out of the 4 mins ordered (other than that Mrs. Lincoln, did you enjoy the play), was really good, but I won’t be back anytime soon.
