There’s a larger point about how music has changed


It isn't that artists singing songs they don't write is a new thing - it's that artists who do write their own material have largely been squeezed out of the marketplace, because major labels still mostly control what's successful, and they only want to promote artists that will have near-universal appeal. The safest bets are the songs that were engineered by a handful of Swedish producers.

Popular culture is fractured to the point where there is no monoculture. Let's say Beyonce is today’s equivalent of Sinatra, although an album like Lemonade (which is a clear collaboration) would have been impossible without her as the primary artist behind it. But the widespread popularity of someone like Neil Young would be far less likely to happen today.
