We lived in such a house for a number of years


and I did quite a bit of work myself. I was always aware of how dry the old wood was. It still had the old knob and tube wiring, and obsolete (and dangerous) fuse boxes. (They had separate fuses in the hot and return (ground) leg of a circuit, so if the fuse in the ground side blew, the circuit would "out", but with 120 volts still present.) I'm sure that a lot of homes of that era burned when someone replaced a fuse with a penny.
