Final exams and papers dominate the days of the men, as they make the last push to learn and earn a strong academic record this year. Of course we are intermingling all of this with our team’s training, albeit with reduced duration. Sunday we were back in the weight room as usual with the heaviest lift of the week (highlighted by dead lifts and bench press), followed by the film session reviewing and learning from Saturday’s ACC championship game versus Notre Dame. We practiced Monday morning (6v6 theme) and took Tuesday off, due to the exam schedules. We are back on the lower field turf today, with the practice plan focusing on transition offense / defense and clearing / riding. Simply put, it is wonderful to be together with this team in May, savoring the days and time with the full knowledge that May lacrosse is not guaranteed, but earned.

Ryan Conrad has had a heck of a month: he continues to be a Finalist for the Senior Class Award (voting can be found at ) while also recently being added to the Finalist list for the Yeardley Reynolds Love Unsung Hero Award. In addition, Ryan was named the ACC Tournament MVP Saturday following the victory over Notre Dame. What you do not see in the press is the guidance he is providing to our team. Serving as a captain for two years has allowed him to learn from the responsibility he shared with Scott Hooper ’18 last year and to flourish in it this year alongside fellow captains David Smith ’19 and Michael Kraus ’20.

This past Saturday, the attendance at Klöckner Stadium for the ACC Championship game was startling to me. With only a week notice due to the new format of the ACC tournament, our fans and alumni found room in their schedules to invade Klöckner and provide a festival atmosphere. Our men were provided a true home-field advantage with 4,500 in attendance, filling the far-side berm and standing all around the field. Thank you to those who came back this past weekend and know we are grateful to the Virginia teams of the past who originally created the excitement and love affair between Charlottesville and lacrosse! We are fortunate to have one more game on Klöckner this spring, hosting Robert Morris in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. Game time is 7:30pm, Saturday, May 11th.

The demolition of U-Hall continues! Everyday more and more of it is taken down: soon only the roof and the major supporting columns will remain of the gutted building. The official implosion date is set for Saturday, May 25th when it will stand no longer. The removal of the Cage and Onesty Hall, with U-Hall next, has felt liberating for most of us, eliminating outdated building structures and opening up sight lines. This is an exciting time to be a part of UVA and the athletic department: we are thankful for Carla Williams’ determination to attack the facilities immediately in her tenure.
