Thoughts and questions for next year...

I was so impressed with the way the team came together after a shaky start to the season. Coming into the year, I thought Final 4 was an attainable (but stretch) goal, and to get here, beat Duke, and win the title makes this the most gratifying championship from this fan's view since 1999 (which will always rank #1 for me because it erased so many years of frustration). Hats off to the players, coaches and support staff on a wonderful year!

When I reflect back on this team, I think I'll always associate them with how hard they competed -- riding like no team I've ever seen, never giving up no matter what the odds -- just a joy to root for. On a trip down memory lane, each of our recent championship teams have particular associations for me -- the 2011 team with the switch to the zone defense and playing so many converted attackmen as middies, the 2006 team with passing ("they pass the ball harder than most teams shoot") and (of course) perfection, the 2003 team with Tilman Johnson's tour de force on Memorial Day weekend, and the 1999 team with running a full 2nd attack line for what seemed like a quarter per game to tire out the opposing defense.

Thinking ahead to next year, I'm obviously excited by the potential (I'd thought before the season that 2020 was when we'd really be a contender for the championship), and I had some questions that I thought some of our "in the know" posters might have a perspective on:

1. It seemed like we had a number of players hurt this year -- Quinn, Reilly, Murray, Merle -- which of them are expected back next year?

2. Who will take over the 3rd spot on close defense with Sausted and Kology? The incoming first-year Bowers? Reilly? Someone else?

3. Who bumps up to first midfield? Early in the season, I might have thought Moore would move back to middie, but when you set the single season points record as an attackman it is hard to see messing with that kind of success. Does Schellenberger come in as a middie? Are Connor, or Simmons ready to make that leap to 1st mid? Does Dickson get moved to middie? Quinn return? Where does the incoming first-year Garno fit in to the picture?

From a national perspective, is next year the year Duke finally drops way off -- other than Montgomery and Robertson, they look like they've got nothing but 3rd attackmen and 2nd line middies to me. They better have a GREAT recruiting class coming in or they may take a step back. I hope their incoming class is TERRIBLE, and we beat them 19 of the next 20 times we play them.

Penn St, Yale, Maryland and Penn look like the biggest threats next year to me, probably in that order. Who am I overlooking?
