Kodi is a LOT simpler these days than it was, e.g., when it was called XBMC

But I'm not necessarily recommending it. I don't use it for anything other than with the ESPN3 add-on to capture WatchESPN stream URLs. I have my own way of doing these sorts of things. For example, I (usually) use Kodi to get the stream URL, streamlink to download it, ffmpeg to remux it to MP4, then if necessary, VideoRedo to edit it, and/or use ffplay or some other compatible video player to either just view the stream directly or an in-progress download. But you can do most of the same thing easier with a number of browser add-ons, like Video DownloadHelper (available for Chrome and FireFox), which you can also use to download the stream. But there have also been times when the URLs produced by Video DownloadHelper have not downloaded well for some reason, e.g., they've resulted in downloaded videos (via streamlink at least) that had crazy a/v sync and other problems, like jumps/discontinuities.
