Off topic but

It’s before dawn on June 6 and I’m thinking of my Great Uncle Cal Callahan who 75 years ago was in a USN transport ship off the coast of France. He was a young Captain of an artillery unit who wouldn’t actually land until the 8th but I can only imagine the thoughts that were going through his head at that time.

Cal came back unlike so many others in his ship and the other ships assembled that morning. He attended UVA on the GI Bill, had a successful career and supported UVA with his heart and checkbook the rest of his life. The TA Room in the Blow Hall addition is named after him.

The last time I saw him was when the ACC Tournament was in Tampa. I drove over to Kissimmee where he had retired and surprised him with tickets. Dawn hadn’t come yet for the basketball program but we had a blast just spending time together watching hoops and talking about UVA and family.

Outside the arena was a US Army recruiting tent. He went over to talk to the young enlisted man handing out hats and brochures. Come to find out the recruiting officer had been assigned to the same unit Cal had led 60 years earlier. Suddenly he was royalty and everyone wanted a picture taken with him.

Cal didn’t get to see us make it all the way back in basketball but he always said if we kept doing things the right way we would reach the pinnacle.

I wore a UVA shirt of his the night of the Final so he could share in the moment and today I’m wearing that Army ball cap his fellow “duck hunter” gave him in Tampa that afternoon.

To Cal and all who were with him that morning, to those who came back and moved on with their lives and especially to those who never left France,

Thank you.
