How do you teach a kid to be aggressive in sports?

I have a young son who's in his first year playing at the A level of his soccer club. For him, it's the first time he's playing with kids who are as good as if not better than he is, and I think it's been an eye-opening experience, mostly in a good way.

The one thing I've noticed is that he isn't playing with the reckless abandon and freedom that he was playing with before. I'm sure it's because he realizes that he can't just dribble around these kids like he used to, but I suspect it's also because he's not as confident around these kids, so he isn't even attempting some of the things he's capable of doing.

I'm just encouraging him to keep trying hard to get better, to listen to his coach, and most importantly, to keep having fun. I think he could be more assertive, but don't want to harp on him about it, so I've kept my mouth shut. Ultimately, it's kid soccer, and I'm happy he's found something he really likes that's not video gaming or playing on the ipad.

Even D1 athletes (e.g. Hunter in the tourney before the final) and professionals can get passive, so I realize that it's not uncommon. Just don't want him to lose confidence and maybe stop enjoying the sport as much.

Curious what others have experienced. TIA.
