I wish there was an easy answer. I've dealt with this exact same

issue with my 11 (soon to be 12 year old son) for the past 3 years. I think it mostly gets better with age / confidence. My son has always had great technical soccer skills, but would play very tentatively at times. As his confidence has grown, so has his aggressiveness. His game has really taken off over the last 6 months and I can't say I ever figured out anything that solved the aggressiveness issue. I do think for him it was mostly about confidence.

I also noticed that playing on the bigger field has made a difference with his game. He moves from 9v9 to 11v11 this upcoming year, but they began practicing 11v11 at the end of last year and his tryouts this year were all 11v11 on a full size field. The unskilled, but big aggressive kids can't bully their way around a big field and technical skills become more important. On the bigger field he has more space to operate which allows him to better use his technical skills to his advantage, which then builds his confidence, which in turn has him playing more aggressively.

So give it time. Be encouraging and make sure you're building his confidence and not inadvertently doing the opposite.
