Those are tempered glass.

All doors are now glazed with either tempered or laminated glass. Tempered is stronger, but a slight nick anywhere on the glass will cause it to break into hundreds of small pieces (explode). Laminated glass (like a windshield) will crack or even shatter, but the plastic laminate will hold all the pieces in place. My guess is that over the years the frame may have loosened and nicked the glass or a screw holding the frame together somehow came in contact with the glass and caused the failure.
