I agree it was disappointing, but I’m confused as to what you

mean by “rebuild of the wall.” Do you mean the wall at castle black, where Jon was sent at the end? If so, that wasn’t the section of the wall destroyed by the dragon. That was hundreds of miles east, where the wall meats the sea, at the former eastwatch by the sea fortification. That section of the wall is still destroyed, probably never to be rebuilt.

As to Jon’s fate, there’s a debate whether or not Jon abandoned the night’s watch. I don’t think it’s either or. Members of the watch used to range for months, sometimes years at a time up north in bad weather. Obviously everyone in the watch and the wildlings loves and respects Jon, so him going north for months, maybe years, won’t be seen as an abandonment of the watch. Instead, he can be considered to have the responsibility of resettling the wildlings. He can spend his life where he was most comfortable, and I assume he’ll make token visits to castle black once in a while.

I think if it was meant that he abandoned the watch, we would’ve seen something more obvious, like him removing his cloak. Instead, I just think he was looking back at the closing of one part of his life, namely everything south of the wall.
