My concern was that it would be used for telemarketing and spam


I don't remember specifically what they were asking for other than name, address, email address, and phone number. Yeah, you could find out such stuff on a particular person if you tried hard enough but a directory is a marketing gold mine to educated, and above average wealth, individuals. For example, insurance companies sell call lists to new agents and a UVA alumni directory would be a bonanza for such individuals. I remember being inundated with personal visits and phone calls from whole life insurance salesmen when I graduated from UVA, as did my classmates. Don't know how they got my phone number and address from the University.
