High 50s in the morning. I would wear a

short sleeve shirt and a long sleeve fleece on top. Vehicles are open so you get a strong breeze while driving. A vest without sleeves would probably be a little chilly in the morning. By afternoon it’s pretty hot, so I’m down to the short sleeve shirt. Usually long pants in the morning and I switch over to shorts in the afternoon.

If you’re into photography and you can swing it, bring two camera bodies so you can have one with a shorter lens (I went with a 24-105) and one with a longer lens (I had a 100-400). You definitely need the long lens, but there are times where the animals are right next to your vehicle and the 100mm is WAY too long. Changing lenses is a pain, and it’s also pretty dusty so you want to avoid getting dust in your camera.

Also, if you have some sort of head scarf or even a spare long sleeve shirt, the buzzing flies in the afternoon can be quite bothersome, so it’s good to have something to cover your ears.

If it’s your first safari, spend the first day or two just finding different animals, but then have your guide stake out a potential kill in the early morning or early evening. Or if you’re in the Mara, stake out a river crossing of the Mara river.
