Too bad you only have a day because both Mesa Verde and


Canyonlands are well worth it. It is a bit of a haul to canyonlands though. Monument valley is actually closer than canyonlands I think.
Having done both what I would do is take a drive around that San Juan Mountain Range that Durango lives in the south east corner of. Go to the Westside to telluride, explore the little town, and take the chairlift up and over to the ski resort. Continue around the mountain to Ouray. It’s a neat little town in a deep valley among beautiful high rise mountains and there’s some trails right at the west side of town that are fun. There’s also a hot springs of some sort but I’ve never done that. It’ll be a full day to go all the way around the mountain back to Durango but you’ll see spectacular scenery and Telluride and Ouray are worth it.
