I don't know anything about South Bend, but sometimes the booster club

exerts an undue amount of influence on the MLB organization, to the point where the MLB team capitulates to their desire to have players for a full season as much as possible. Obviously Chicago makes roster moves and there are guys promoted to MB, but I know, for instance, that my home team changed affiliations once, and was so upset at the number of roster moves the parent club made that they switched back after their 2 year PDC was up.

Myrtle Beach wouldn't have beaten Down East or Fayetteville even with reinforcements, but it's a nice perk at the end of a season to give a guy a taste of the next level - shows confidence in them, and they get to see how they can do. If they struggle, write it off to small sample size and use it as a motivator in the winter; if they do well, roll with it and know that you can perform at that level the next year. The Red Sox do this a lot. This year, they promoted Triston Casas, their top prospect, 2 days before the end of the season, so that he could get a taste, and be a reinforcement on their post-season roster. He struggled a little, but still hit vs. a dominant Wilmington pitching staff, and his swing is a thing of beauty. I'm sure he now has the confidence that he will be a force in the Carolina League next year, and possibly earn a promotion to AA by mid-year, depending on how well he does.
