I was a chem major in college

and while I was totally pre-med the whole way and not planning on a chemistry career, I did attend for the summer between Junior and senior years a summer internship program at the University of Southern Mississippi's polymer science research center. it was a lot of fun, got me great exposure to research into polymers/plastics that were going on there. Got to work directly with the grad students and professors on some projects. I don't know how to parlay that specifically into a job, but maybe he could look up that particular college's polymer science program and see what information they have. If he likes polymers and that field, maybe that would be an avenue to reconsider joining their grad program that may then lead to some job prospects.
