Only thing that matters is how this team responds this year...

There’s a tremendous foundation and culture existing within the football program, and especially, throughout the locker room.

The leadership is rock solid as well. A lesser team faced with an OL that has struggled with its cohesiveness, young players forced into action well before they are physically/technically ready comes totally unglued and possibly fractures the licker room. All Bryce Perkins has done is embrace his OL brethren even with greater support and told them not to allow all the outside chatter or his sacks get them down. I thought they had a solid outing against GT that bodes well moving.

This is a team that has only lost three games going into mid-November — the “money month” — with an opportunity to win 8 games for the first time in eight years, with a winner-take-all game to win the Coastal Division. Although, reading comments on this board at times it seems like we’re having a BC/Cuse type season.

Moreover, this is all happening with our top offensive weapon playing through an injury most of the season, inconsistent results from the running attack for various reasons, loss of both starting CBs, one of whom was an irreplaceable All American, 3 other DBs on depth chart are out, not to mention how those losses have impacted the LBs, who now must drop into coverage more often to support pass coverage that reduces blitz packages, and if course, the aforementioned OL issues.

Any one or two of these can (and has) detailed other teams this season. But somehow these kids have found a way to grind out seven wins (counting) and continue to have all their goals still in front of them.

This staff and these players have done an exceptional job this season against the odds. History tells us winning 7 or more games at UVA is a tough climb and only a few coaches have achieved it consistently. Going into the final game of the season with a chance to win a title in football is very rarified air for this program.

This is a special group. While they’ve had many challenges this season, it is a group if players and coaches I’ve come to really appreciate, and much more than past teams with greater talent.

BTW, I like the fact this week and next week’s game are both being played at Noon. Team’s practice schedule and routine will remain the same.
