I ref and never played, also don't watch much tv

Most of what I ref is U14-U19 travel in NoVa. There's so much soccer here though that much of "travel" is glorified rec. The upper level Travel leagues I will center U14-U15 matches, but I can AR anything. Also ref some low-temperature adult matches and rec matches when those are what fits into my schedule.

I never played, don't watch much on TV, and didn't really even know the details of the rules (e.g. offsides) until I got certified 3 years ago. Biggest thing is fitness - if you want to do challenging matches, you need to be fit enough to keep up.

My biggest weakness is foul identification. I have a hard limit of 3 matches a week imposed by my wife - I feel that what I need most is more time on the pitch.

One of my biggest assets though is that my day job involves getting fussed at by unhappy customers who spend lots of money with my company and we failed to deliver to their expectations in some way. So parents or coaches can yell whatever the heck they want at me and it is super easy to ignore, which makes it easier not to get rattled. That said there have been times where I've felt a match slipping out of my control. Perhaps erroneously, I will err on the side of blowing the whistle too much instead of too little in those circumstances, so I get the complaint of "let them play, ref!" more than the kid writhing on the ground with a no call.

Overall though - it's a ton of fun, and given that there are so many varying levels of soccer you could officiate, and way too few officials to go around, you could easily work as many matches as you wanted at a level you were comfortable. Even with the limits my wife imposes, I make more than $100/week (before taxes) and there are people who make much more than that, especially if you're willing to work high-school games during the week.
