I agree the biggest issue will be replacing the Smith/Busby combo followed as usual by pitching. We need to find that starter who can give at least 5 innings consistently. Since I've started following UVa softball I have yet to see it. I didn't have a lot of faith in Frei last year and have less of an expectation of Wilkinson. She appears to have been mostly a relief P at Princeton and not very effective even in that league. Even in HS she was not dominant. She had nearly a 3:1 Walk/K ratio in 2019 at Princeton which doesn't bode well and we've had trouble in that area ourselves. I hope Aly can be that workhorse and takes another step this year. She showed promise for sure last year.
We definitely need the someone to step up offensively and for at least 1 other pitcher to take a leap forward. Coach Jo is recruiting pitching and players with athleticism and flexibility position-wise. It will take some time to develop but the talent is good.
Either way I look forward to taking in some games at Palmer and seeing these girls develop into contending at least toward the middle of the pack of the ACC. It's going to take some time for sure. I'm just looking for improvement.
