I didn't expect Frei to save the season all by herself either but I didn't think her ERA would go up by 3 runs. In hindsight I think there were several factors that resulted in a down season for her. The McIntyre grad program she was in was incredibly demanding and she was in another softball world with us vs BC. She was paired with Dreswick at BC and between them they plunked nearly 60 batters. Frei, and I'm sure Dreswick could throw hard and I think the BC coach, since fired, used intimidation as a primary weapon to get batters fearing for their lives and swinging at anything. That is anything but Jo's style. Nobody should feel bad for Frei though, she's a great young lady anyone would be the proud parent of who made the most of college athletics from a career advancement prospective and is likely earning more at Fidelity now than most reading this, myself included.

I also could have sworn Aly went 5+ innings several times last year so I looked up the stats and she went 4 2/3rds or more in 11 games. Among those games were the toughest opponents we saw last year, Tenn, FSU, VT, JMU w/Good pitching and all were either close games or were competitive when she was pitching. She had good WHIP and K/BB ratio stats last year but gave up a lot of HRs and that combined with sloppy defense is an ERA killer. Hopefully she doesn't have to do that for 50 games this year but at least she has experience in a very high-pressure situation, I'm sure Jo was feeling the heat during the 13 game losing streak.

She also did have a great HS career for a bad program in what may be the toughest HS conference in Va. Her WaPo All-Met profile said she had 274 strikeouts in 139 innings which averages 2 K's per inning. Her riseball is still great, didn't get as many K's last year as she did in HS but tons of flyouts. The big difference between HS and college is that the same pitch doesn't work every time and college hitters can hit out of zone pitches for HR's. Hopefully she learns from that and progresses this year and one or more of the FY's can combine for 100+ solid innings.

Wilkinson didn't have great senior year at Princeton but her numbers for prior years were much better. I don't think anyone expects her to be a workhorse but hopefully an inning eater. Similarly, Clare had good movement when she was pitching last year but just struggled with giving up free bases. She gives a very different look as a lefty so hopefully she gets enough early season work in to be effective.
