More on Ronnie Walker. Why he chose Indiana, why he's transferring (long).

The following is a summary of what I've been able to find on the internet regarding both Ronnie Walker's decision to play for Indiana and why he recently chose to enter the transfer portal. This post has five sections:

1) Some background information
2) Walker on his July visit to Indiana
3) Why he chose Indiana over UVA and Michigan State
4) Why he's transferring from Indiana
5) More on Walker as a player and a person

1) Some background information

Walker (class of 2018) was a 4-star prospect, #5 in Virginia, #13 RB in the nation and #319 player overall (247Sports). Hopewell Coach Ricky Irby on Walker: "He has a forty time that matches his GPA.” He had a 4.4 GPA in high school and a 4.5-second 40-yard dash. Irby: “{But he's} an even better person than a football player, and that’s saying a lot because he’s a really good football player.”

2) Walker on his July visit to Indiana:

“It was great and it was welcoming. All the coaches were there and I liked the environment. It was very pleasing and calm. The coaches, I really loved them. I’ve been talking to them for a long time and now it’s time to {commit} and that’s what I did.” -- John Harvey, recruit804.

3) Why he chose Indiana over UVA and Michigan State

Walker on UVA: Walker visited UVA multiple times and likes how UVA's new staff has made him a priority. "I like the way they practice. Their up-tempo is organized. I like the coaching staff. They really like me up there." -- -- 247sports (Sept 27, 2016). -- Walker on his decision to commit to Indiana: “It was very, very difficult. I built a tremendous relationship with Coach Mark Atuaia, the running back’s coach there, he and I kept in close contact.” -- ultimaterecruit.com/804football

a) Academics

Walker: At Indiana, “The student comes before the athlete." He was impressed by the school’s tutors and libraries." He wants to major in engineering or business. -- Aug 28, 2017, RTD. “I know it’s going to be difficult, but that’s why they have tutors and a library {where} I can go and do my studying.” -- ultimaterecruit.com/804football. “What (set) Indiana University apart was that for the last four years, they had 100% graduation rate in football, and that really pulled me in. The student comes before the athlete. I also like big competition and the Big 10 is kind of a running back’s conference.” -- John Harvey, recruit804. He liked Michigan State's pro-style offense plus their academics -- ultimaterecruit.com/804football. The thing he said about Duke was that he was big on Duke's academics. -- Sept 27, 2016 -- 247sports. Walker was an Academic All-Big Ten selection. -- Walker's 2019 bio at iuhoosiers.com

b) He formed a strong bond with RB coach Mike Hart

Walker is coming to Indiana mostly because of new running backs coach Mike Hart. Mike Hart’s name recognition is from his relatively recent days at Michigan and his 3-year NFL stint with the Colts. -- Kyle Robbins, crimsonquarry.com, Dec 20, 2017. Mike Hart was Syracuse's RB coach when Syracuse offered Walker a scholarship (Oct 07, 2016). Hart was then hired by Indiana (spring 2017), but continued to recruit Walker. -- Aug 28, 2017, RTD. Walker: “I built a great relationship with {Hart, who starred at Michigan in the mid-2000’s). He still recruited me {after he was hired by Indiana} and that meant a lot to me.” -- ultimaterecruit.com/804football.

c) The opportunity to play as a true freshman

Walker: “They are going to give me an opportunity to come in and play as a true freshman. They (want) me to come in early so I can play early or (possibly) start.” -- John Harvey, recruit804. Hall runs a spread-offense, a system that Walker is very familiar with at Hopewell. -- ultimaterecruit.com/804football

4) Why he's transferring from Indiana

Walker appeared in all of Indiana's 13 games in his sophomore season, but had substantially fewer carries (27 carries for 80 yards) than classmate Stevie Scott (178 carries, 845 yards) and newcomer Sampson James (81 carries, 275 yards). -- Jon Blau, indystar.com (Feb 6, 2020). When Scott was injured in the final two games of the season, newcomer Sampson James started in his place. -- hoosierhuddle (Feb 6, 2020). In Indiana's 20-16 victory over UVA, Freshman Stevie Scott ran 31 times for 204 yards and one TD. Walker had no carries for Indiana in their game vs UVA. -- Sep 8, 2018 IU vs UVA.

5) More on Walker as a player and a person

Walker had a trusted role as a third-down back and pass protector, but even when he wasn't getting a lot of touches in games, IU coach Tom Allen praised him for his work ethic and for subscribing to the program’s “love each other” mantra. -- Jon Blau, indystar.com (Feb 6, 2020)

Indiana RB coach Mike Hart singled out Walker's speed on National Signing Day. Hoosier Huddle wrote that Walker possesses "impressive speed and change of direction capabilities." -- rotoworld quoting Hoosier Huddle (Feb 24, 2018).

Scout.com: "Walker is a dynamic running back who is a threat to go the distance every time he touches the ball. He's an instinctive runner with good patience and vision. Walker also shows good quickness and has great speed. He also doesn't mind running between the tackles and gets a lot of yards after contact." He's got some minor tweaks to make with his game, notably as a receiver. -- Aug 28, 2017 -- bleacherreport. In the off-season prior to the 2019 season Walker focused on improving his catching. -- youtube video, Aug 7, 2019. in 2019 Walker had 12 receptions for 112 yards, including a 64-yard TD catch against Eastern Illinois. -- Mike Schumann, thedailyhoosier (Feb 6, 2020).
