My daughter did a lot of international volunteerism in HS and college; most of it medical related.

Three paths to check out:

Church - ours did a lot of medical mission work in Haiti and the more downtrodden Central American countries. Our activities were arranged through local permanent organizations.

College - alternate spring break opportunities. Those are often sourced through permanent volunteer organizations. The chat on this board earlier this week about Lima being a great destination spot was interesting. Daughter volunteered on the other side of Lima's Wall of Shame. You don't want to vacation there.

Permanent organizations. Daughter did a summer in NW Thailand (medical and teaching related - orphanage). This organization was Rustic Pathways. They're all over the globe, in to everything volunteer-related, and hire full-time.
