Forbes ran an article a few years back positing...

that the elite schools are significantly about the network to which you gain access as a graduate. The author noted a family would be willing to take on debt to get their student an education at the best possible school (Ivy, Public Ivy, prestigious small private) because it was an investment in a "ticket" to that school's network of loyal alumni and the reputation a degree from that school carried with it.
