Heads in the beds

Pretty much every academically selective liberal arts college/university uses sports (preppy sports in particular) as a hook for patronage. If kids are eager to apply & are decent in a sport, have good academic creds & parents who can pay the freight that’s what makes it all work best. This is especially so for the ones that are not high endowment institutions.

I’ve always presumed the same for schools like Furman who use that same hook for kids who want to play in a D1 level NCAA program. I doubt Furman was anywhere close to fully funded & it might have been the heads in the beds strategy wasn’t working well enough to justify it. We may see a lot more of this, unfortunately, as institutions review their “return on admissions office spots for sports recruits capital” models. If it wasn’t making it rain in terms of more donors, this economic condition creates an easy out. Nobody is going to excoriate an AD who cuts non revenue sports now.
