Heads in beds -- doesn't work so well in D1

Furman is a non-selective small liberal arts college. Only 2600 students, with only 38% of them male. It is a classic D3-type school playing the heads in beds game. High headcount sports like baseball, football and mlax are a great dangle to attract the enrollees they desperately need -- male, average or better academically (for that school), average or better as a net revenue payor.

At a school like Furman, mlaxers would typically be above-median payors and above median academically. Even after the small lax schollie dollars and the merit schollie dollars (which are much bigger). At Furman, 84% of students get "merit" schollies. Which means that basically no one pays the 50k tuition sticker price -- everybody gets a discount (athlete or not).

Problem is trying to do this in D1 -- where travel and other costs and also competition are higher. And also doing it from SC. Much easier to pull that plan off at a D3 school in PA or OH where your entire conference is located within a 60 mile radius.

Without baseball or mlax, Furman should probably consider adding an undergrad business or engineering program to attract some dudes.
