There's lots of full pays at the highest end schools; few anywhere else.

Outside of the top 50 or so USNWR, hardly anyone pays full sticker price.

At the very very top (HYPS) about 40% of students are full pay, and 60% get need-based financial aid (funded by huge endowments). At HYPS, they could easily double or triple their tuition and folks would still line up to full pay.

Fancy privates in the next band (Vandy, Duke, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Gtown) will have 45-55% full pay students. The other half get financial aid. Mostly need-based, but there's a little bit of highly competitive merit aid too.

For lower down privates, hardly anyone full pays. In this band, you get the very large "merit" scholarship money (in addition to need-based aid). Depending on how strong the school's brand is, the merit money may be quite limited (5-15% of students) and highly competitive. Or close to universal -- 85% of Furman students get "merit" aid. It really is just a discount.

End of day, aid is aid and money is money. For many schools, if they can keep their overall discount rate to 50-60% of sticker, they are doing well.
