I know what you’re saying and some people don’t like it...
But I have to agree with a few prior comments, $657 isn’t a big number out of almost $2800. It’s the cost to bear for attending a Power-5 school with major athletics, IMHO. I paid it for my kids and looked at that student fee expense line much of how I just described it.
Athletics is part of the school culture in much of the same way as having a University-wide architect to ensure design continuity and historical accuracy remains. Athletics breathes an important soul into the fabric of an institution and helps foster a certain personality and narrative the would otherwise be missing. All this comes at a cost and should be shared as part of the experience.
Heck, when I was in school, the tuition was so cheap, relatively speaking, I can hardly recall student fees being a separate expense or even discussed for that matter. But of course, the General Assembly was appropriating far more to UVA’s annual budget back then too.
