The NCAA would have to change the limit Rule for any schools to change the number of football scholarships.

Even if that happens, doesn’t mean they would spread the money out to non-revenue sports anyways. The savings are eventually going to be redirected in other ways to help the revenue programs.

For example, Clemson cut a few sports not too long ago, then proceeded to build a nearly $100 million dollar training/recreational facility that only football players are allowed access to. Now, that money could have easily renovated their facilities, and operated those programs for years and years. And I bet you they have zero regrets there about it too, outside of a few alumni and families of those cut programs.

I don’t love it, but it’s the way it is. Trickle down economics don’t work in collegiate athletics either, unless you force the departments to redistribute the wealth with rules and regulations.

Don’t be surprised to see other big time athletic programs begin to follow the Clemson approach. D-1 schools have to sponsor 16 sports to stay in D-1 status. I suspect more and more athletic departments will be dropping down to that number if our economy stays limited, as it is now
