I see this from the middle.

SOCA has 1 top team playing for CCL and they are always solid. Just under that is the second tier "travel" team which generally plays the next counties over, Greene, Fluvanna etc. Yet, they still manage to have 2,3 or even 4 travel teams at each age level.

Parents get to say "travel" and SOCA gets to say "Mo $$." On occasion I have ended up on one of these games and the quality of play was questionable, and often Challenge/rec level.

I am not sure how many parents actually think their kid will be paid to play at the next level, but it is sadly, fairly high. Receiving a "grant in aid" from qa 40K private D3 school is not an atletic scholarship. Kid would have recieved it for any number of reason in order for the school to get the student/partial tuition and tax break.

That said, I coached one of those 2nd level teams and the girls had a great time. Loved to go to tourneys, had fun in practice and was essentially the same 18 for 7 seasons. Eight went on to play at college, one who actually did get money. Key thing I learned- the ones who went to schools who offered a team slot RATHER than their first choice in schools- transferred (without exception) after one year.
