William and Mary Swimming

W&M Swimming is a great example of doing it right on a low budget. Until very recently, they had zero scholarships for men, an maybe a couple for women. I think they’ve added a couple in recent years, but still far from fully funded. But they operate on a super low budget, and win their conference year after year.

I think they have the advantage of being a very sought after academic institution, so kids can use it to get in, or they want to go there already and figure they might as well swim. They’ve also had some really good coaches, which is probably the key.

It’s pretty much a slightly upgraded version of D3 athletics/Ivy league style.

With that being said, ECU is a far different institution so I’m not sure how it would work there. W and M has been far superior to them for years now with a fraction of the spending
