I think it was earlier than Baptise. Didn't Alex Smith use it when he played for Delaware? UVA fans may have blocked out the memory of 2007 when the Hens upset the defending NC and made it to the final four, where they lost to Hopkins. That year Smith was so dominant the Hens used two sets of wing men on face-offs, a pair of first middies, both lefties, my old hs player and Jordan Hall, who went on to play for Team Canada, and then a pair of ssdms, one of whom was the son of former UVA middie George Turner. When the offensive guys were on the wing and Smith won the draw, as he usually did, they subbed in the third member of the first midfield. When the dms were on the wings on the rare times that Smith lost the face-off, they subbed in a pole. They almost never used a pole on the wings.
Smith was dominant enough that I believe it was not long after he graduated that they changed to rule to send a player to the box after the third violation to discourage teams for going early and effectively ceding possession but still being able to set up in half field d.
