This rule change is just for faceoffs

The moto grip (and the other change to not allow the knee down) just gives you more leverage to have both hands twisting in the same direction to clamp down on the ball when the whistle blows. They are hoping that making the clamp less dominant will lessen the times where both players just grind out long stalemates with one player having the ball clamped and the other player just smothering his stick and the ball not coming out.

I think that they are also hoping that it'll add more variety to face-off moves to level out the dominance of some FOGO specialists.

It would be almost impossible to use that grip with the ball in your stick so it doesn't affect field play.
