I'm sure there's data on it somewhere, but I don't know. There ARE a lot

who start in the minors at the very least. Guys like Huston Street get fast-tracked to the majors as closers, because they don't need to learn much in the minors, and have electric stuff that translates to MLB closer material. But if you have a guy with extremely good stuff who was a reliever in college due to team needs and not limitations on their ability to throw multiple pitches or pitch effectively the 2nd and 3rd times through a lineup, and they come from a top D-1 program, they'll sometimes be stretched out as starters to see if they can be pro starters, before they are developed as relievers.
