Obviously all about the money and next CBA. I heard one of the ESPN

talking heads say that every owner offer has been for the players to receive about $1.5 billion in total or about 35% to 40% of their contractual pay. Apparently the owners will break even or maybe be slightly profitable cash flow wise , if they can reduce player pay to about $1.5 billion The owners have refused to budge off of that amount, but instead have just repackaged how their offers are worded, but always keeping the player money at about the same level.

The players are insisting on pro rata pay on a per game basis and need more games to be played so that they get more $$ in total.

The real problem is with no fans in the stadiums and that obvious loss of $$, there is no obvious $$ solution

IMO another owner strategy is to have this low salary year count as a contract year so that all of those big money contracts like Harper's and Trout's, never pay out in full, even though they are guaranteed in theory.

I am surprised that the players have not capitulated yet, because hey get nothing if there is no season.

As far as free agency goes it is unclear to me if this year will count, but the players say it should and the owners say it shouldn't.

The other major factor is next year's CBA. Any weakness shown by either side now could be costly in the future. The owners are apparently seeking a hard cap and and revenue sharing with the %'s to be negotiated, but with the owners getting the lion's share and thus coming out on top as is true in all other pro sports that have hard caps like the NFL and NBA. The owners have always hated baseball's free agency and a hard cap mostly ends the owners bidding against each other for star players and thus mostly 'destroys' free agency and those awful large contracts for the star players.

The above is just my opinion. I would like to read what others think.
