I'm nowhere near as convinced as you are

But here's the thing, Briggs could be 2x the player next year and still only be 60% of Twyman or 50% of Rousseau. There is no reason to think Pitt/Miami will be stagnant, and they were each better on defense than we were last year. Those two plus Clemson unquestionably have more talent coming in to this season.

I am not willing to blindly expect a corner to step in and be elite. My recollection was that Grant was pushing or even with Bratton when the injury happened, does that sound right? Two players of 2019 Grant's caliber is not even close to cutting it. Our corners were really not good last year, that was quite obvious against certain opponents (safety was obviously a mess too due to injuries). The level of improvement we'd need would be very significant at multiple spots. Even then, I'm not sure we match the 2018 team, which had a lights out secondary of such a caliber that it barely mattered how many linemen we had.

The 2019 defense made plays, but we were often holding on by our finger nails. Lot of high-risk blitzing that Pitt/Miami don't need because they have NFL pass-rushers that offenses must account for, and even then can't stop. Our coaching staff (Mendenhall/Howell/Poppinga) is among the best in the country, and I know they'll maximize what we have.
