Not Because of COVID

The timing would suggest that the coronavirus is to blame, but these cuts really have nothing to do with it. Athletic departments can just use COVID as a convenient excuse to cut sports.

In recent years, their athletic department's operating budget was $80 million, with just $40 million in revenue. They need to bite the bullet and cut football if they want their department to have any chance at long-term success. They got caught in the fallacy that you can just spend more money to keep up in football.

Unfortunately, if you look at TV revenue projections for the next 10 years, the ACC is going to struggle to keep up with other P5 schools here soon. Not many schools in the ACC, if any, will be able to handle the $40 million dollar TV revenue disparity that they predict to exist by 2030. Even Clemson will be at a distinct disadvantage to Big 10 and SEC schools in the coming years.
