It's not about being optimistic/pessimistic etc

At no point have I said that I think our defense will be anything less than good, and I have repeatedly stated that our defense will be clearly improved. We aren't comparing to 2019, we are comparing to what 2020 Pitt, Miami, VT etc have coming back. The assertion above was that we'd have the 2nd best defense in the conference. Someone else, without any listed reasons, asserted that we would even be #1 in some metrics. If our corners improve to be league average, that would be a huge step up--but in my opinion, it still would not be enough to have us as a top defense. Better than 2019 for sure, and well ranked nationally.

Grant made some plays and showed a willingness to be physical, but he was an outright F in coverage last year (and he could have easily given up a couple more TDs). Even if he's improved leaps and bounds and is in the C range, Pitt and Miami (to say nothing of Tech, who has the best returning corners in the conference) have more talent at that position returning. Bratton was solid but he is rehabbing the ACL. Behind him are more guys that we just have not seen play. I trust Howell too, but we haven't seen the guys play.
