The new cases are younger. We are getting better at treating it. Deaths lag cases by 2-3 weeks, so we haven't hit the biggest part of the rise yet. Deaths aren't falling as rapidly week-over-week as they were before though.

There's also the caveat with the data that different states assign deaths in different ways. It's not entirely clear that what NY would call a COVID death aligns with what FL, TX and AZ would call a COVID death. If that's the case, then the fact that those states have the biggest outbreaks may not produce published death rates that match what NY was reporting.
