Fun exercise but he falls into the media trap on scheduling

I do not understand why some people feel January and a second semester are so sacrosanct. It is always writers and school administrators who haven't been in a classroom for several decades, not people who understand both the life of kids academically and what makes the sport go.

New Years Day and the bowls that accompany them screams to be a great quarterfinal time as people are out of work and can travel. You can stack games for TV on an entire day. They already do and it works well when semifinals are there. There is no school so kids can adequately prepare. It also means finals for first semester are not an issue. Remember when Virginia declined the Champs Sports bowl over finals? I still think that was a good decision for our student athletes even if it did mean a trip to Idaho after Christmas. Our action made the bowl change its date. Other blows with rare exceptions avoid those dates for the same reason.

So that means the semis and the finals would land somewhere between the 7th and the 13th and the final would land the 14th and 20th. (fine with home stadiums in the semis) Which means the second semester at most schools. My response. So what? I went to college and the easiest least taxing time academically the entire year are those first few weeks in the second semester. No papers or projects due. You are often reviewing material for a 102/202 class you leaned in 101/201. Mid December was one of the toughest times. Finals, holiday season interrupting things. That would be an awful time to prepare and play a game. Moreover, your ratings are going to stink as people are busier and not able to watch during that time as easily with Christmas parties on weekends, the NFL in their final push, and other winter activities that disappear post December 25. January 1 (or the 31st/2nd if the 1st is on the Sunday) also is a special day that the NFL will not be on as at that point they are locked into Sundays for the most part. There is a reason the bowls chose that time post-Christmas originally after all.
