One wonders if the new normal budget # don’t look like varsity for varsity.

There are some non-revenue sports in every D1 athletic department which will drop down budget wise to virtual varsity anyways. Even if sports like wrestling & sailing survive cuts to remain as GIA money sports, the operating budgets are going to get carved up just the same. This Stanford move just makes the Title IX math a bit easier for Stanford.

What Brown’s earlier move showed is the only way this gets avoided, as a practical matter, is if programs get endowment money from alums/other supporters to make the financial side work. That could certainly happen in the next few weeks at Stanford if straight outa nowhere a deep pocketed donor says “here’s a check to save women’s field hockey [or other]”

I’d be concerned that universities will broadly test this stalking horse technique to test the pools for such donors to gain back some financial stability.
