But cost savings are illusionary in the short term.

If you assume that a vaccine will emerge before spring/summer of 2021, you have to question what the real cost savings to a school would be if they are only concerned about the 1 year hit. Schools still have to pay professors, still have to maintain buildings, most all the school that drop sports say they will continue to honor scholarships, most coaches have contracts and usually those are honored for at least a year. So unless you are making the cuts for long term cost savings, the only real savings would be travel. So if you believe that the dangers from Covid will be past us by spring summer of 2021, there are no incremental cost from maintaining sports for the one year period. Yes you have the book keeping loss in that the Athletic department will not be paying the academic department for tuition, room & board, fees, - but that's only a paper expense since the school has the majority of those cost regardless. I think most major Power 5 schools will just bite the bullet for a year unless what they really seek are longer term cost savings.
