Maybe this will clarify (from Lars as of Sept 18)

We are back on the practice field. Smaller skill sessions started Monday (14th): we are ecstatic to be training again. The smaller groups consist of 10-12 men, combining both practice and a band lift on the field with strength coach Steven Cuccia. Next week, the plan is to move inside the weight room for the lifting with those same smaller groups. If our staff and men can prove our training techniques and drills to be safe, we can grow the size of our grouping both outside and inside. We are hopeful to be holding full-scale practices by mid-October.

Over 90% of class experiences for UVA students this Fall semester are on-line. Unlike the Spring semester, the format and structure of on-line classes are much more rigorous with higher expectations as the professors had much more lead-time to prepare for the Fall semester instruction. It is starting to feel like business as usual, but with obvious differences. We will not compete against any outside competition this Fall semester, and we will be done by November 21st with training because no one returns to Grounds after Thanksgiving. This makes for a shorter off-season, but of course we are grateful for any and all time together.

What has been keeping our staff occupied since September 1st has been the initiation of phone calls (FaceTime), Zooms, e-mails and texts with prospects and their parents of the HS Class of 2022 (rising juniors in high school). Sean Kirwan, along with Kip Turner, have been exhibiting extensive creative talents with the construction of eye-popping graphics and videos. These are shared on social media and some are sent directly to the recruits. In addition, we have hosted several virtual tours for recruits and their parents that include a visit to the Lawn to meet with 4th year Jackson Appelt ’21 in his room, to Klöckner Stadium with Kip and to the front of The Graduate, where I “welcome” them to their “hotel”. As we do these, I both admire what Sean and Kip have created while also wondering if this is truly going to make an impression with a family that is really sitting in their living room and not about to walk into any hotel. Our men have been great, speaking with recruits for up to an hour on the Zooms, sharing their stories and giving the recruits their time in order to paint the UVA lacrosse experience. While we cannot comment publicly about verbal commitments, we are very happy with the start of this recruiting season! But there is more work to do.

Rob Schmalz and I are considering creating additional Zoom calls so we can connect with you again. We will be in touch.
