I guess the ACC viewed it as the Champ Trophy, not the Tourney Trophy

ACC has always had a different view on this topic than most other conferences, who usually award Conference Champ trophies to the regular season winners (and ties), and only use their tournament for AQ and a Tourney Trophy.

ACC had instead historically awarded their Conference Champ trophy to the tournament winner, and gave nothing but sympathy to the regular season champs until they finally created a separate second-class trophy for it when the old guard felt sorry for Cliff Ellis.

In this case, since FSU finished a clear game ahead of everyone else, I don't see the controversy at all. They were given the Conference Champ trophy. For the ACC, when it comes to Conference Champ, there can be only one.
