Some big advantages this year versus 2017

(1) In 2017, after Nichols was dismissed, we had only one all-ACC or near all-ACC player: Perrantes. Shayok, Hall, Wilkins and Thompson all brought something to the table, but none were at that level. This season we have three: Hauser, Clark and Huff who have a real shot of being one of the 15 best players in the conference).

(2) In 2017, three of our better rotation players, Shayok, Hall, and Thompson had somewhat similar roles, all basically a 2 or a 3. That was also the position for Guy, and with London at the point, where Ty would get some time too. In short, we had a logjam with five guys competing for two (or three when we played four small) spots. By contrast, this year our three best returning players all play different positions, there is no overlap, and all three can and will be often on the floor together.

(3) In 2017 we had no inside-out game because we had no one who could score in the paint. Diakite was raw, Salt never had that sort of ceiling as a scorer, Reuter was overmatched athletically and by size against better competition. This year we have a seasoned Huff and Caffaro has more potential at this stage because of his size and skills to score inside than any of Salt/Reuter/Diakite. And while our outside game last year was perilous, it should be siginificantly better this season with the addition of Hauser.

(4) The one area where 2017 had an edge was in the talent of the first years with Guy and Ty (and Hunter as a red shirt), but that gap is not that big and the incoming talent better matches areas of need at the 2/3.

It's not a perfect team and you previously noted perhaps the biggest deficiency: No proven defender to stop athletic wings (and likely a step down in help D in the interior with the graduation of Key and Diakite).
